Homemade ink

When I was in high school I did a lot of pen and ink illustrations.

In fact, I remember spending a whole summer making extra money drawing ink caricatures of friends and family. That was the summer my eyes went bad. Maybe it was poor lighting.

Ever since, I’ve had an affinity for pen and ink work, even though I haven’t done it for years.

Today I came across a post by Howard Lyon at Muddy Colors that makes me want to get back to my inky roots, but this time using homemade walnut ink.

Making walnut ink sounds pretty easy, and you end up with more than enough for yourself and others. It has a nice, dark brown tone to it that is very appealing.

Perhaps I’ll give ink brewing a shot! I think I’ve still got my pen and nibs around here somewhere: I never throw out art supplies.
