Winter Elk

There are a lot of different critters living out here in the woods. One of the more rare creatures we see are elk. They’re out there, but very cagey and they seldom allow themselves to be caught unaware.

This winter, however, is one of the coldest in recent memory, and the snow has covered a lot of the ground fodder they would usually subsist on. As a result, yesterday I was surprised to look out the window and see three elk hanging around the edges of the yard. One of them sampled the sunflower seeds in the bird feeder. The others pawed away the snow from a compost pile of weeds and grass, looking for something to eat.
